Freedom School Series: Born In Flames

Join WWC Sunday at this Womanist-centered film where we'll be joining a panel following the screening. FREEDOM SCHOOL FILM SERIES: Film: Born In Flames (1983) Set in the aftermath of a socialist revolution in the U.S, this doc-style film follows a black femme organizing womanist insurgency groups against a still deeply misogynistic and racist regime. Context: The BBWC (Black and Brown Workers Cooperative) will launch our monthly film screening series which is an initiative of our FREEDOM SCHOOL Platform. The collaborative series is co-hosted by the Kinfolk Collective: Kinfolk Collective utilizes ethnomusicology, radical black ideologies, traditional African cosmologies and narrative forms to inform the structure and visual language of our cinema. The program includes a collection of short films and a performative lecture expounding on a New Black Cinematic Vernacular. As moving images become the dominant form of communication Kinfolk seeks to subvert traditional approaches to cinema in hopes of creating a new black cinematic language. The performative lecture combines improvisatory theater and pedagogy to deconstruct the films presented and ideas in relation to this emerging cinematic language. This effort is supported by Galaei Philly. Galaei recognizes the vital importance of authentic visibility and representation in film and television for black and brown queer and trans people of color. Art and media, specifically film and television, are a vital culture-shaping institution. Seeing oneselves reflected in the media you consume is one of the most fundamental identity-forming experiences you can have. This is especially important for our communities as Film has been a straight, white, boys club for generations and resisting that structure is a radical act. Mission of GALAEI: Galaei is a queer Latin@ social justice organization. Queer acknowledges and represents the mosaic of sexual and gender identities within our communities. Latin@ represents the multiracial, multicultural experience of Latinidad. Galaei embodies the common history of resistance and resilience of Latin@ and queer people. We are unwavering in our commitment to the advancement de nuestra familia through leadership and economic development, sexual empowerment, and grassroots organizing. *A Panel Discussion Happens Afterward* *Light Refreshments* *Suggested Donation* $5-$10 -nobody will be turned away for lack of funds- If you have any questions or concerns email:
